Written for those who want to learn how to play soprano ukulele while singing songs, and for educators who want to learn how to teach others how to play, this book provides individuals and groups of learners with a sequenced, collaborative, learning community approach to teaching and learning in soprano ukulele. With careful selection of the songs, players at all levels of playing ability can learn to play and sing together as an enjoyable, Christian, social-music making experience and for services. The instruction provided in the book equips the learner with understanding in how to play chords on the instrument while singing; i.e., for the purpose of harmonizing song melodies for singers. Unlike traditional hymn books wherein songs are ordered by categories that support Christian life and the church year, songs and hymns in this book are ordered by level of learning and playing difficulty: from the songs and hymns that are most accessible for the beginning player, to those that require more advanced levels of learning and proficiency. In alignment with the author’s learning sequence, at the onset of instruction, beginners learn how to harmonize songs that require few chord changes and gradually build their knowledge and playing ability towards songs that require more chord changes. A separate listing of the songs according to category and function during the church year appears in the last pages of the book. The hymns and songs are written in keys that are excellent for beginning and all levels of soprano ukulele players, and written in a mid-vocal range to accommodate almost all singers – including children, youths and adults. Songs are ordered in alignment with the learning steps and sequence. Pictures, diagrams and instructional videos support the comprehensive, written descriptions of the learning sequence. Learners make music from the onset and continue to acquire new levels of proficiency. Those wishing to teach or lead groups of players will appreciate Lois Guderian’s learning sequence – both the amplified written and video comprehensive descriptions and the Summary of the learning sequence for quick reference when guiding instruction.Hard Copy also available from LoVeeG Publishing, LLC
